Local Catholic school division hopeful ruling will be overturned

Apr 26, 2017 | 11:48 AM

The Light of Christ Catholic School Division is hopeful the province is successful in contesting a recent Yorkton court ruling that would prevent the province of Saskatchewan from funding non-Catholic pupils who are attending Catholic schools.

Light of Christ director of education Cory Rideout said the school division is “certainly disappointed with the ruling.”

“We believe people should have the choice in terms of where they want to go, for whatever reason that may be. There are people out there that are of different faiths that choose to come to Catholic schools for whatever reason. That was the gist of our defence in that particular case.”

Rideout is confident Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall and Education Minister Don Morgan will be successful in defying the ruling.

“Hopefully, there will be little if any change to the system,” he added. “All we can do is hope at this point. But we’re going to continue to do what’s best for our kids. We do a good job with our kids. They are learning and our parents are happy.”

“The feedback we receive is people are happy with Light of Christ.”

Saskatchewan Justice Donald Layh had recently ruled that provincial funding of “non-minority faith students” attending Catholic schools is against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The ruling is set to take effect June 2018.
