Practice safe driving all year long: RCMP

Apr 24, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Even though the snowy weather and icy conditions are almost behind us, it does not mean drivers should stop practicing safe driving habits according to Battlefords RCMP.

On average there are 52 fatal collisions in Saskatchewan every year.

“Motorists should keep in mind that just because the snow is nearly gone from the highways there is still the possibility of slippery driving conditions,” Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt said. “Fluctuating temperatures at this time of year make it ripe [for] black ice. So reduce your speed and pay close attention to the road.”

The leading contributor of all accidents and fatalities in the province continues to be distracted driving. Statistics report that in 2015 there were 125 distracted driving accidents resulting in 17 people being injured.

“We need everyone to stay alert when they are behind the wheel. There are new regulations with increased penalties for distracted drivers as well that could be costly not only financially but it could cost a human life as well,” Woolfitt added.

While many believe distracted driving is caused by just cellphone usage RCMP say distractions like eating while behind the wheel, putting on makeup or programming your GPS can take your attention off the road as well.

Woolfitt also recommends that as the seasons change it may also be a good time to have your vehicle tires properly inflated as well.

“This serves two purposes,” Woolfitt said. “First, under inflated tires are a safety issue and secondly it can reduce fuel efficiency in your car.”

He also added that you should have your windshield wiper fluid topped up and headlights kept clean at all times so that you get the maximum effect of your lights.
