Battlefords Toastmasters: Helping speakers for 40 years

Apr 18, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The Battlefords Toastmasters club has been helping area residents develop communication skills and enhance leadership abilities since 1977, and will be celebrating a milestone in early June.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the club is hosting an evening on June 3, at the Western Development Museum and the public is invited to attend.

“It’s going to be a great evening,” said Kelly Watt, V.P. of public relations for the Toastmasters. “We will be presenting some awards and of course anyone who wishes to build up their communication skills can check us out as well.”

The club currently boasts 21 members and meets every Wednesday evening during September to June from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Don Ross Centre.

Psychology Today Magazine reports that “our fear of standing up in front of a group and talking is so great that we fear it more than death, in surveys at least.”

“We have had people walk into our room terrified just terrified of speaking publically,” explained Watts. :However, you come and participate and you get better and see results. It’s like a muscle, the more you use it the better it gets.”

Watt credits Toastmasters for opening up doors for her with a recent career change.

“I didn’t know what to expect.  At first I was scared but the group is so supportive and genuine that I began noticing I had more self-esteem and confidence in a short amount of time,” Watt added.

Watt also explained that Toastmasters is ideal to help an individual become better at job interviews and meeting new people as well.
