Preliminary hearing starts for accused in Carol King death

The man accused of murder in a long-running cold case was in Saskatoon court Tuesday. 

Joseph David Cassie is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Carol King, his ex-girlfriend.

King, 40, went missing near her farm in Herschel, located around 150 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon.

She was last seen on Aug. 6, 2011. Four days later, her car was found in a slough just east of her farm.

On Aug. 27, 2011, a man driving a quad discovered King’s body 10 kilometers north of the small community. Police said she was identified through her dental records.

Strange events following her death drew a lot of attention to the case – her house burned down, and later a cryptic stone memorial to King was put up on a property nearby.

In interviews following King’s death, Cassie maintained he had nothing to do with it.

He was arrested and charged in July 2016, nearly five years after King died.
