Town of Battleford sharpens its pencils for strategic planning

Apr 10, 2017 | 2:34 PM

Town of Battleford council is in the process of putting its pencils to the spreadsheet as its gets its strategic planning sessions underway to update the municipality’s long-term goals.

Council will be taking part in its second session this Wednesday. The strategic plan will be looking at project-planning for the next five to 10 years.

“To be financially prudent in what decisions council is trying to make, you need that plan to help guide you for a whole-town perspective. What’s the next direction we go, what is the next project we check off the list?” Mayor Ames Leslie said.

Some of the long-term infrastructure projects for the township are to prioritize which roads and sidewalks need replacement, as well as water and sewer piping replacement work, as part of the town’s infrastructure upgrades.

“Infrastructure is getting old within the community, so part of that strategic plan is to look at that, and [determine] how do we get this stuff done in an appropriate amount of time, and with the appropriate amount of finances to address it as well,” Leslie said.

The town will be able to look at its latest roads report to help identify roads of concern that need to be upgraded.

The mayor said infrastructure replacement projects will cover all parts of town.

“You want to do your pipes first before you do your roads,” Leslie said. “Part of the plan is to cover where we need to start first.”

The administration and public works departments will make recommendations to council about some priority projects they have identified that need to be done first.

Leslie added the main objective in completing the strategic plan is to ensure it is a comprehensive outline that includes many of the larger capital projects the town will be focusing on in the future.
