Legion band seeking support for restart

Mar 16, 2017 | 12:00 PM

If Jim Ramsay and Robert Tannahill have their way we could soon have pipers piping and drummers drumming again in the Battlefords.

A special meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 3 at the Legion Hall in Battleford to measure the level of interest in restarting the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 9 Pipes and Drums band. Everyone is invited regardless of age or skill level.

“It would be nice to see the band get started again,” founding member Ramsay said. “The last time we were all together was in 2004 at our 40th anniversary. Over the years through members passing and moving away our numbers dropped until there was no one left.”

The band originally formed in 1964 as the North Battlefords Pipes and Drums Band. It played throughout the area during parades and concerts with members changing throughout the years.

At one time the pipes and drums band boasted nine pipers and four drummers.

“That was a great number for a community of our size,” Ramsay said. ”It was a lot of work but it was a lot of fun as well.

“Bob (Robert) Tannahill of the Legion contacted me and said he thought this community needed a pipes and drums band and that the Legion would once again be willing to sponsor it,” Ramsay added. “It’s a bit of work but it is very rewarding too.”

The meeting begins at 7:30 at the Legion Hall on 26 St. in Battleford.
