Weyburn RCMP save partially-frozen kitten on highway during blizzard

Mar 10, 2017 | 5:33 AM

The blizzard that swept through eastern Saskatchewan this week was hard for everybody, but RCMP went out of their way to help whoever they could — four-legged friends included.

According to a Facebook post from Saskatchewan RCMP, two members from the Weyburn Traffic Services unit were out patrolling on Highway 39 amidst the storm.

Cst. O and Cpl. C, as they were identified in the post, were driving when they saw something — first believed to be a chunk of ice — on the road. While Cpl. C was able to swerve, the other officer driving was not.

RCMP said it went under the centre of the vehicle, but did not make contact. As police began backing up for a better look, the “partially-frozen lump” began walking towards them.

That partially-frozen lump turned out to be a small orange kitten.

Police suggest the kitten took refuge from the elements under a vehicle. They believe he was still in the vehicle as it drove away, but at some point either jumped or fell onto the highway, where the blowing snow stuck to him.

The post went on to say the kitten wasn’t moving much, but wouldn’t stop meowing. The RCMP officers took him to a veterinary clinic. They checked in later to discover the kitten was alive, alert and meowing away.
