Teen who killed baby to be sentenced for escaping custody

Mar 8, 2017 | 12:05 PM

A 16-year-old girl who killed a baby last summer was in Saskatoon Provincial Court Wednesday.

The girl, who can’t be named due to a court order, is to be sentenced in June for the second-degree murder of Nikosis Jace Cantre.

She had run off from Saskatoon’s Kilburn Hall Youth Centre in the days before Cantre’s death.

Wednesday’s hearing saw the girl plead guilty to escaping lawful custody.

Court heard Kilburn Hall staff were alerted the girl had left her room around 12:45 a.m. on July 2, 2016.

Staff reported they heard the girl yell “sorry” as she bolted down a hallway and out an exit. A note found in the girl’s room indicated she took off because she was homesick.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the girl’s lawyer said she was also having issues with some of the other girls in her unit before she ran away.

Cantre was six weeks old when he died on July 3, 2016. At that time, family told 650 CKOM he was found badly beaten in his playpen.

The girl pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder in Cantre’s death.

She was sentenced as a youth on the charge of escaping lawful custody. A judge imposed a penalty of 120 days’ custody.

The Crown has indicated it will seek an adult sentence when the girl appears again to be sentenced on the murder charge.
