North Stars top-5 on latest national rankings

Feb 20, 2017 | 1:46 PM

The Battlefords North Stars have cracked the top five of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s weekly rankings for the first time this season, coming in at fifth.

Their 44-8-1 record puts them on pace to beat their franchise record of 91 points, but it also has them in elite company nationally.

Only one junior A team across the country has more wins than the North Stars – the Brooks Bandits, who have 45 in 53 games played. Brooks remains in the top spot on the rankings.

Two other teams have 44 wins along with the North Stars. That would be the Georgetown Raiders and Steinbach Pistons, ranked second and fourth, respectively.

Two Quebec teams have a better winning percentage than Battlefords, as Les Cobras de Terrebonne has 42 wins in just 46 games for a .913 mark and College Francais de Longueuil has 41 wins in 47 games for an .872 winning percentage. Les Cobras are ranked third and College Francais is sixth.

The North Stars also have the second fewest goals against in the entire CJHL, with just 98 goals allowed in 53 games. Brooks is first with 93, while Battlefords shares the second spot with Georgetown.

Next up on the schedule for the North Stars is a Wednesday road date with the Kindersley Klippers, followed by weekend games with Nipawin and Notre Dame.

Battlefords then closes out the season next week with a home-and-home against Kindersley.
