Volunteers needed at local food bank

Jan 7, 2017 | 7:00 AM

If your New Year’s Resolution was to become more active in our community, then the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre wants to hear from you.

Erin Katerynych, the executive director of the centre and the Empty Stocking Fund, said while they appreciate the volunteers they have, more are always needed.

“We have volunteers as young as 12 who come out to help, all the way up to 80 years of age.” said Katerynych. “If you have a few hours a week to spare or a few hours a day, drop by or give us a call.”

With the demand for the service growing every year, the need for volunteers also continues to grow.

“There are many ways someone can help, whether it’s packing boxes, finances, events, we will find something for you to do.” said Katerynych.

While the weeks leading up to Christmas are traditionally the busiest time of year for the Food and Resource Centre, the organization is busy year-round anddo much more than emergency food assistance.

The Coats for Kids Program collects and distributes winter clothing for youngsters in need. In 2015, over 200 coats were dispersed. Another popular program is Food for Kids, where food bags are given out weekly through schools to children in food insecure households.

The organization also helps prepare income tax returns for low income families and individuals. Last spring almost 500 were filed on behalf of clients in our area.

The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre is located at 1171-110 St. in North Battleford.
