Habitat for Humanity house delayed again

Dec 6, 2016 | 3:02 PM

It has already been delayed a year and according to the site manager, the very first Habitat for Humanity house in North Battleford could be delayed another several months due to contract work.

The North Battleford Habitat for Humanity House started construction in the spring of 2014 and was projected to be finished in December, 2015. A lack of skilled volunteers in August also delayed the project. Now in December of 2016, the house still isn’t livable and according to site manager, Ron Braun, won’t be until later on in the New Year.

“Unless a bunch of contractors came in and away they go, it might make it livable by February, but I can’t see that happening myself,” Braun said. “At this point I am the one doing the work here for both apartments.”

Braun said now the house needs electrical and plumbing done, but the contractors hired have been tied up with other projects around the city.

Braun added volunteers have been great but the house is at the point now where the professionals are required. Until then, dry walling, along with some other finishing touches which are needed to make it livable will have to wait.

The duplex is being built for two single mothers. According to Braun, the future occupants are painting where they can to add a personal touch to the apartments and are currently waiting on cupboards to arrive so they can set up the kitchens.

Braun said he expected things to slow down, especially around the holidays.

“I won’t hold my breath when it comes to December because I know people have that set aside for Christmas and their families,” Braun said.

Braun said luckily the team was able to get the majority of the outside done before winter hit. There is still some fencing left to finish and the sidewalk is incomplete, which have to be done before either family can move in.
