Addiction Awareness Week falls in time with medication roundup

Running parallel to Saskatchewan’s Addictions Awareness Week is a campaign to encourage safely disposing of medication.

The Prairie North Health Region (PNHR) launched a medication round-up campaign on Nov.14, which encourages residents throughout the region to dispose of unused medication. Residents are asked to gather up all unused or expired medication and bring it to local pharmacies for disposal.

Population Health Promotion Coordinator with PNHR, Kim Tradewell, said it’s a matter of safety.

“When medications accumulate in the home, there is an increased risk of misuse or abuse of them,” Tradewell said. “The best way to ensure that medications are not accidentally ingested, or do not fall into the hands of people who could abuse them, is to take your medications as prescribed and, if you don’t finish your medications, to properly dispose of them.”
