Warm weather wipes out World Cup men’s downhill races at Lake Louise
Dustin Cook’s long-awaited comeback in downhill skiing won’t happen in Lake Louise, Alta.
For the first time in 29 years, a World Cup downhill at Lake Louise has been cancelled. The International Ski Federation (FIS) and local race officials called off the season-opening men’s downhill Nov. 26 and the super-G on Nov. 27, meaning the Canadian men’s speed team will not race a World Cup at home this season.
Recent temperatures above freezing in the mountains have closed the window needed to make snow for not just the races, but for training runs scheduled to start three days prior to the downhill.
“The weather just didn’t get cold enough, soon enough,” chief of race Darrell MacLachlan told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. “This is unusual.”
