Vikings season ends at hands of Falcons

Oct 24, 2016 | 4:53 PM

The Comp senior Vikings kept it close until the very end, but ultimately fell 32-20 to the Marion Graham Falcons in their semi-final game on Friday.

The playoff game came down to the wire, as the Vikings found the end zone with seven minutes left in the game to close the gap to 29-20. That touchdown was thanks to a 20-yard reception from Grade 10 tailback J.T. Lamb.

Then, the Vikings understandably went for the two-point conversion to try to narrow it to a one possession game, but they were stopped. Marion Graham would then hit a field goal with just under two minutes remaining to increase their lead to 12 points and hold on for the win.

Quarterback Damon Dutton had a solid game, throwing for over 200 yards and running in a touchdown himself. Lamb added a running score of his own to his reception touchdown.

Marion Graham had a formidable ground attack thanks to running back Hayden Gollnick, who ran for three touchdowns. Quarterback Adam Dyck was responsible for the other Falcons score, on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Alex Dewar.

The Vikings took a big step forward this season and will get many key players back next year, including quarterback Dutton, who was a junior this year.

But for the graduating players, this is the end of the line.

The Falcons will go on to play the Bishop Mahoney Saints in the 3A finals in Saskatoon on Saturday.

More to come.
