A look at the highways ahead of long weekend

Oct 7, 2016 | 12:00 PM

The first snowfall of the year came a little earlier than usual and as people prepare to travel for the long weekend, MeadowlakeNOW took a look at the Highway Hotline around the provinces northwest.

Those driving to Prince Albert from Meadow Lake will have the worst drive with Highway 55 showing winter driving conditions. Highway 4 South of Meadow Lake is showing seasonal driving conditions with the trend continuing for drivers going to North Battleford, Saskatoon and Lloydminster.

Winter conditions are just one thing drivers have to be careful of; sections of Highway 55 heading East to P.A. and areas of Highway 4 heading South to North Battleford have construction taking place. Roughly halfway to Saskatoon from North Battleford on Highway 16 also has a section of construction.

According to Environment Canada, the Meadow Lake area is expecting snow and rain beginning again on Friday, Oct. 7 and ending Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Temperature wise, throughout the weekend, highs of 5 Celsius and lows of -2C are expected.

In North Battleford, Environment Canada shows snow in the forecast from Friday, Oct. 7 to Monday, Oct. 10. Saturday and Monday have a 30 per cent chance of snow while Sunday shows a 60 per cent chance. Highs of 4C and lows of -5C are expected.

Before traveling, it’s recommended to check the Highway Hotline and Environment Canada before heading out.

All information is accurate as of publishing, however, weather can change in an instant.
