Girls soccer tournament comes to Crusader Field one team short

Oct 3, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Both the John Paul II Crusaders and Comp Vikings girls soccer teams got their feet wet in an exhibition tournament over the weekend at Crusader Field, but less soccer was played than originally anticipated because Prince Albert Carleton didn’t show up.

Still, both Battlefords teams, along with Se Se Wa Hum and Meadow Lake, each got three games in over the course of the two-day tournament.

The highlight of the weekend was when the Crusaders and Vikings faced off against each other on Friday, as both coaches agreed there’s always something extra on the line when you face your cross town rival.

“That’s always the best team to beat, is the other team in town,” Crusaders head coach Amanda Hansen said. “They’re fun to play, but they’re always the best team to beat.”

However, neither team could find the back of the net, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Vikings head coach Sebastian Prost felt his team was unlucky not to come away with the win on Friday.

“Towards the end of the first half and into the second half, I felt like we were the dominating team,” Prost said. “We created chances, created space, found players in space and it was just unlucky that it didn’t go in for us.”

The powerhouse team this weekend was Se Se Wa Hum, who is also hosting this year’s regional tournament in the 2A division, a division made up of these four exact teams.

Se Se Wa Hum beat JP II 5-1 and the Comp Vikings 4-0.

“I think the game against Se Se Wa Hum actually went very well, despite the fact that it was a 4-0 loss,” Prost said following the tournament. “The final score was not as indicative of the overall game as you’d think. We held them to 1-0 until probably about 10 minutes left in the game.”

Hansen, meanwhile, was hoping to see improvement from her young Crusaders squad as the tournament went on, but unfortunately found that wasn’t the case.

In addition to the 0-0 draw and the 5-1 loss to Se Se Wa Hum, they lost to Meadow Lake 4-0.

“We have to work pretty much on everything,” she said. “My biggest expectation of them is to remain positive because some of them like to get down on themselves.”

A complication for the Vikings team heading into regionals is whether or not they’ll be able to round up enough players to compete. Last year they couldn’t because students had other commitments.

“We sometimes go, sometimes not, depending on numbers,” Prost said. “Sometimes work starts to ramp up as the girls start getting their first jobs or their schedules just begin to fill up in later October and into November.”

Prost said they’ll make a decision in the next week and a half on whether the Vikings will compete or not.

The top two teams from regionals advance to provincials, so realistically, one spot is up for grabs behind Se Se Wa Hum between Meadow Lake, JP II, and the Vikings.

Regionals will take place the weekend of October 22.
