Veteran councillor decides to run again in N.B

Sep 22, 2016 | 2:00 PM

This is not Don Salie’s first rodeo.

The ex-councillor has decided to throw his hat back in the ring in hopes of re-winning a seat at the table.

Salie has served on North Battleford city council five times off and on since 1988, last serving in 2006. He has also served seven years on the District Health Board and is currently the treasurer of the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre.

Salie is concerned about affordable housing for seniors.

“We have new facilities which are very nice but only for those who can afford them,” Salie said. “I would like to work with council to talk with Saskatchewan Housing and the provincial government to make more cost effective facilities available to people who have low income.”

Another important issue for the candidate is infrastructure spending, specifically pointing out the condition of the city’s roads conditions. He said though there are programs in place and roads are being repaired, not enough has been done over the summer. Roads already in rough shape will only get worse over the winter.

The retired insurance broker said his experience as a partner at Pawlus Insurance would serve him well in council.

“City functions needed to be handled in a business like fashion, and when you’re handling a business, you find out very quickly what works and what doesn’t,” Salie said. “The city is a very large business and the planning is a very important part of it.”
