Water in North Sask. River deemed safe: WSA

Sep 16, 2016 | 10:12 AM

The province is assuring residents affected by the Husky oil spill, the water from the North Saskatchewan River is safe to use, once again.

The Water Security Agency (WSA) is newly allowing the cities of Prince Albert, North Battleford and Melfort to divert and treat from the river. The agency said the decision came after 88 per cent of oil spilled was successfully cleaned-up, plus a rigorous technical study, monitoring and review concluded.

The WSA requested a water safety assessment from a technical group to address human health threats, the fate of the oil, treatment requirements and long-term monitoring.

After both internal and external reviews of the assessment which included experts from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Alberta, it concluded oil components detected in the North Saskatchewan River do not present unacceptable health risks to residents.
