Quebec member of the legislature wants riding named after Maurice Richard

MONTREAL — A Quebec member of the legislature wants her riding named after former NHL great Maurice (Rocket) Richard.

Marie Montpetit is expected to file a motion in the national assembly on Thursday to have the Montreal riding of Cremazie eventually bear Richard’s name.

Montpetit says the initiative follows moves by Richard’s family and a local minor hockey association the Montreal Canadiens legend helped found.

She says there is nothing in his longtime neighbourhood to remember him by.

The riding is currently named after Octave Cremazie, a Quebec poet who was born in 1827 and died in France in 1879.

Cremazie also has a major thoroughfare and a subway station named after him in Montreal.

Richard died in 2000 at the age of 78. He helped the Canadiens win eight Stanley Cups in his 18-year career.
