Mayor Mahon not running after 16 years in council chambers

There will be a new face in the mayor’s chair after the upcoming Battleford election on Oct. 26.

Mayor Derek Mahon will not be running for re-election after 16 years with the town as mayor and as a councillor.

“It’s 12 years on council and four as the mayor,” he said. “My personal and business life has picked up substantially over the last little while and it’s time to move on.”

Mahon first announced he wouldn’t be running in the upcoming election back in May during the State of the City and Town address.

During his years in the town’s council chambers, Mahon saw different mayors and council members come and go.

“It’s been interesting. I’ve been here for, again, 16 years. I’ve worked with a lot of mayors, worked with Mayor Gail Sack and Mayor Chris Odishaw as a councillor and lots of councillors over the years, also worked with Mayor Gary McArthur in my recreation board days,” he said.

Mahon said he has seen changes in the town and is proud of the work accomplished over his 16 years with Battleford.

“I think obviously over the last 16 years there’s been a lot of growth and development in the town. We’re always proud of the Town of Battleford. We’re proud of the work that has been done, the work that’s ongoing and the work that councils of the future will be doing,” he said.

Mahon added the people of Battleford have treated him very well over his years with the town.

The call for candidates for mayor or councillor is now open and nomination forms can be picked up at town hall. The nomination period will close on Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
