Super Dogs take the spotlight at Northwest Territorial Days

Aug 18, 2016 | 2:35 PM

Super Dogs raced, sniffed and performed their way into the hearts of exhibition attendees this week.

The furry performers were featured on Wednesday afternoon at the Northwest Territorial Days exhibition in North Battleford.

Anne Martin, one of the trainers, said although the dogs are racing Super Dogs isn’t a competition.

“It’s having fun with our dogs,” she said. “It’s something we can enjoy and show off with our dogs.”

Martin was at the exhibition with one of her five dogs, an Australian Shepherd. She’s from B.C. and travelled with group throughout the summer.

The Super Dogs compete all over Canada and are primarily pets, not performers. They dance, weave, race, and perform tricks for audiences.

In North Battleford on Wednesday, one dog showed off its “super power” by finding a young audience member’s shoe that was hidden. Other dogs raced over hurdles, wove through flags, and jumped over their owners.

Martin said she participates because she loves dogs and loves entertaining people. The trainers aren’t the only ones who have fun though.

“The dogs love it,” she said. “The more applause, the better, the faster they work. As soon as the music starts, they’re ready to go (on) stage.”

The Super Dogs perform again at Northwest Territorial Days on Thursday and Friday.
