Curbside recycling coming to Battleford

Aug 16, 2016 | 6:45 AM

Residents of the town of Battleford will soon be able to recycle household items at home with the introduction of curbside recycling.

The town recently entered into a three year agreement to provide recycling bins to residents. Mayor Derek Mahon said curbside recycling discussions had been in the works for some time and he believed Battlefords made the right choice.

“A lot of municipalities across Saskatchewan and Western Canada have implemented these types of programs. Recycling is obviously well known to a lot of people, there’s still a conscious decision (that) has to be made of what you recycle and what you throw in the garbage. We believe that moving forward, it’s a good step,” Mahon said.

The bins will be sent to residents over the course of the next six weeks and the monthly cost for residents is $5.25. A start-up date is yet to be determined as are days the recycling will be picked up.

While the move to curbside recycling is revenue neutral, Mahon said there will be money saved in the long run.

“There be a number of cost savings over the big picture, obviously reduce the cost at the landfill site,” Mahon said.

Residents who are already on a contract for curbside recycling will not be double billed and will be made a part of the town’s contract. In addition, the communal recycling centre currently located at the Public Works Building will be removed.
