A man with a successful career in the province during the 1950s is joining the Saskatchewan baseball elite.

Wayne Thompson is being inducted as a player into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in Battleford, as part of the latest crop of players and builders being inducted on Aug. 20.

As a left fielder, Thompson had all around skills including great speed, a strong arm and was powerful at the plate.

According to a biography provided by the Hall of Fame, Thompson was born on April 12, 1941, in Semans, Sask. where his family lived on a farm outside of town. His first taste of baseball was on a makeshift diamond at the country school. He also played in the Semans’ minor baseball program. In 1957 the juvenile team competed at the Provincial Juvenile Championships, losing in the final. Thompson would find championship success, winning two high school championships with Semans and two Junior Provincials Championships with Raymore.
