Rivers West gearing up for Sask. Summer Games

Athletes heading to the province’s biggest summer competition got some last minute words about sportsmanship.

The Saskatchewan Summer Games begin Sunday and former Saskatchewan Roughriders player Scott McHenry spoke at the pep rally in North Battleford Wednesday.

He gave the young athletes advice from his years as a professional.

“I look out here, and I see you young athletes and I think to myself, help each other out. If somebody makes a mistake, it happens, that’s sports, that’s life, there’s ups and downs, honestly find a way to pick that person up because that’s how you find true success,” he said.

Boys basketball coach Nav Burke said his team is prepared to represent Rivers West in Estevan.

“I told them the only thing I care about is that they’re having fun; winning comes second. I think we’ll be okay in regards to the winning part,” he said.

One of Burke’s players, Jesse Garchinski, said he’s feeling good just days out from the tournament. He said he’s looking forward to meeting lots of people in the athlete’s village.

The Saskatchewan Summer Games bring together nine districts from all over the province to compete in various sports including baseball, soccer, swimming, archery, triathlon and volleyball. Rivers West is the Battlefords’ district and stretches from south of Kindersley to Meadow Lake.

The athletes will be heading to Estevan this weekend for the opening ceremonies Sunday, July 24. The games run July 24 to July 30.
