A catcher who grew up partly in the Battlefords will be among the inductees to the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame next month.

According to a biography provided by the hall, Fabian Schommer, who was born in the Handel area, moved with his family to the Battlefords when he was 10. He helped the junior North Battleford Beavers win the Western Canadian title at home in 1985, following titles that same year in both the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League and the Saskatchewan-Alberta Junior Baseball League. Schommer went on to Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa on a partial scholarship, and was the 1986 rookie of the year in the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League while playing for the Kindersley Royals.

Schommer was league MVP in 1987, ending the season with a .430 batting average. He also played for the Kindersley team in 1988 and 1989 while attending Magnolia and Southern Arkansas University and St. Andrews University in North Carolina, where he completed his business degree. In 1989 Schommer toured the U.S. as a member of the Canadian National Team.

Schommer continued as a member of the Royals, winning league championships in 1990 and 1991. The Saskatchewan Major Baseball League folded in 1996.
