Weekend sees severe weather in south Saskatchewan

Jul 2, 2016 | 9:06 AM

Environment Canada is confirming that a tornado touched down west of Biggar on Friday afternnon.

Dan Fulton a meteorologist with Environment Canada said that the tornado touched down for around 5 minutes.  Fulton said that 5 minutes is generally the normal amount of time that a tornado will be down for on the prairies.

Fulton said that the tornado touched down in a farmer’s field and that he was not aware of any damage.

According to Fulton, storms originally developed to the south and west of Saskatoon and eventually moved south from there.

Fulton said that Environment Canada did hear reports of funnel clouds in the area west of Highway 11.

Fulton said that large hail the size of ping pong balls was also reported west of Kenaston.

Environment Canada says that we could be seeing more weather like this as Saturday is looking according to Fulton quite “unsettling.”

Environment Canada could be issuing watches and warnings for southern Saskatchewan as the storm areas become more clear.

Fulton said that if people are in the path of severe weather they should take shelter, the best places being as low as you can go in your house, and if possible take shelter under something solid to avoid any possible debris.  It is also recommended that people stay away from windows.
