N.B. Beavers game to fundraise for KidSport program

Jun 26, 2016 | 4:00 PM

An upcoming baseball game will turn into a fundraising event to help underprivileged kids play sports.

The North Battleford Beavers and the Wilkie Brewers will go head-to-head on Monday June 27 at 7.30 p.m., in a game dedicated to the Battlefords KidSport program. The organization raises money to put kids into organized sports, whose families otherwise couldn’t afford it.

Beavers coach Rory Gregoire said his team brought the idea to him last week and he put it together as quickly as he could.

“We think KidSport is a great organization. It’s something to try and get kids involved in baseball. It’s a good sport,” Gregoire said.

“We had a great turn out last game so we’re hoping for the same or better. Hopefully the community will come together and we will raise a bunch of money for a great cause,” he added.

It won’t cost anything to enter Beaver Lions Stadium but donations will be accepted at the door. There will also be a 50/50 draw and a beer garden. All proceed will go towards KidSport.

“It’s the first time we have tried anything like this so we will see how it goes and hopefully build on it from here. We are always looking at ways to get more fans out and get the community into baseball. Hopefully things like this will help and we can do it more often,” Gregoire said.

The Battlefords KidSport held a barbecue last month and does a lobster sale every June to raise money.
