Heart and Stroke Foundation’s big bike returns to Battlefords

Jun 26, 2016 | 12:00 PM

The Big Bike event is on its way back to the Battlefords next week.

On Tuesday, June 28, North Battleford Business Improvement District (NBBID) and Lifetime Fitness gym are partnering up to bring the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike event back for another year.

Lisa Kissick, executive director of NBBID said teaming up with Lifetime Fitness was a natural choice, when it came to finding a partner to organize the event.

“Lifetime fitness is of course a part of the downtown family,” Kissick said.

“And of course, they’re into fitness and exercise and heart health, so we thought ‘why don’t we try to get a team going?’” she said.

The event centres on community members collecting pledges for the Heart and Stroke foundation. Residents register to be a rider on the giant 28-seat bike and cycle through town in order to help raise awareness and support for the foundation.

Kissick said the bike ride is not just an ordinary cruise through town; it’s a real celebration, with music to pedal along to. Riders are also given water guns to refresh fellow riders and the spectators who have come out to watch.

“We’ll spray you on the street if we see you. But mostly, we spray each other. It’s just a really fun event and to get 21 people on a bike. It’s a pretty cool time,” Kissick said.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. in the Lifetime Fitness parking lot and participants will be cruising through the downtown streets until 6 p.m.

There are already a number of riders registered, but Kissick said the bike is not quite full and the organization is currently accepting more volunteers and sponsors for riders before they take off on Tuesday.

“We’re still looking for people to fill the bike,” Kissick said.
