Civic Centre graffiti frustrates city offical

Jun 22, 2016 | 5:00 PM

Cleaning graffiti on tough to reach places can be expensive and it’s getting on the nerves of the city official in charge of cleaning it up.

“It’s really frustrating,” Bill Samborski, North Battleford’s director of leisure services, said. “By the time we rent a lift, buy the paint and hire some people to go and paint over it, we are looking at $1,500 to $2,000.”

Samborski often has to remove graffiti around the city and said it isn’t a big deal when it is on the ground. Where it gets expensive is when it’s up high.

The roof of the Civic Centre in North Battleford has been vandalized twice in the last month.

“There’s a condenser outside the civic centre where we think they can access the roof from. We are going to be doing some more effective fencing around that area to restrict access,” Samborski said.

This is a new problem for Samborksi. He said these recent incidents are the first occurrences of graffiti on the Civic Centre’s roof in the two years he’s worked for the city.

Samborski said painting over the graffiti as soon as possible is the best deterrent.

“It shows that we don’t tolerate it. The last thing we’ll do is accept it on unsightly areas. I don’t want to give someone the satisfaction of seeing it there for weeks or months,” he said.

Samborski urges people to contact the RCMP if they see anyone vandalizing property.
