Fire Chief urges approval before installing fire pits

Sitting around a fire pit can be a great way to spend a summer night, but before building begins residents must get those pits approved.

“We have the power to issue tickets to people who install unapproved fire pits but we rarely do. We prefer to educate,” North Battleford fire chief Albert Headrick said.

The most common hazard Headrick found are fire pits under low hanging branches or power lines. Pits must be 9.9 feet from property lines, buildings or combustible structures.

 “I urge people to go to the city website and look up the regulations before starting anything,” Headrick said.

The fire department will inspect a pit once a permit has been issued. Last month, six unapproved fire pits were shut down.

For people looking to buy fire pits from retail stores, Headrick recommends checking the city site to make sure they meet regulations. 

Once a fire pit is inspected and approved there are still rules to follow. It is a violation to burn anything other than seasoned wood in a back yard pit.

“People aren’t allowed to burn rubbish, garden refuge, manure or animal carcases,” Headrick said.
