Local adults take to the library to relax and colour

Jun 13, 2016 | 5:44 PM

People come to the adult colouring club at the North Battleford Public Library for many reasons: to relax, for company, or to pick up their spirits.

Participant Gwen Cave said she thoroughly enjoys colouring books and finds them relaxing, but addictive.

“I colour an hour before I go to bed and I sleep better and maybe that’s in my head, but then sometimes if I start at 10:30 I’m still colouring at midnight,” she said. “I can’t believe it; it’s addicting.”

Library reference technician Carla Lamontagne said staff started up the colouring club in January during the adult colouring book craze. Soon the club had more than 20 people each night and even added an afternoon session for people who don’t like to go out in the evenings.

The books made headlines last fall, when adults started hearkening back to childhood simplicity by taking time to colour. More intricate colouring books aimed at adults, like Johanna Basford’s “Secret Garden” topped bestseller lists.

Lamontagne said the club has a variety of sheets and books available that she prints off online or are donated.

“There’s so many different designs out there, some are just symbolic like mandalas and some are more like children’s colouring,” she said. “It just depends what you want and whatever you want, it’s out there.”

Lamontagne said activity has wound down since the weather warmed up and the club won’t continue over summer. She said the library has less programs in the summer because people tend to go away on vacation and do more outdoor activities. The programs start up again in the fall though, with the exception of the adult book club which runs all summer.

She said the library’s trying to add more adult programs like the colouring club to the programming for this fall.
