A taste of culture begins this week in the Battlefords

Jun 8, 2016 | 12:00 PM

The Western Development Museum will be host to entertainment, food and crafts from cultures from all over the world this week.

The Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre (BIRC) is holding their ninth annual A Taste of Culture event from Thursday, June 9 to Saturday, June 11.

The event will showcase some of the many different cultures represented in the Battlefords, like Ukrainian, Filipino, Hungarian, Métis and Honduran, BIRC executive director Annette McGovern said.

“This cultural event is extremely important here to explain to people of the community exactly what these people are doing here and what they represent and to try to bring everybody closer together with an understanding of culture,” she said.

Some of the more than 30 performances include Hungarian folk dancers, First Nations dancers, Ruthenian singers and a cultural fashion show. Event goers can watch these and other performers while eating food like perogies, crepes, curry or bannock from the 15 different booths.

The BIRC will also have a citizenship ceremony Friday morning, where 29 people will become Canadian citizens. McGovern said the public is welcome to see the ceremony, although she did add it’s a very formal ceremony and space is limited.

The BIRC provides resources for new residents settling in the Battlefords, whether that’s help filling out paperwork or just showing people around. McGovern said they’re the first stop for any immigrants who’ve settled in the Battlefords.

The festival begins at 4 p.m. Thursday and at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Western Development Museum.
