ARC art reception provides creative space for creative kids

Kids got colourful at a North Battleford gallery on Tuesday.

The Creative Kids exhibition and workshop made its debut at ARC Creative Studios Tuesday, June 7. It was a chance for McKitrick School students to show off their creative side.

Pieces ranging from acrylic on canvas to watercolour, ink on tile and kiln pottery were created by children five to 13.

Each student with work on display took turns observing and pointing out the different works of art they created in a variety of different mediums.

Grade Five teacher Deb Flegl said her appreciation of art was taken to another dimension when she saw her students’ professionally framed art hanging inside the walls of an actual gallery.

“To see something like this in a frame,” Flegl remarked. “It looks so different –very well done.”

Ten-year-old Chevelle Saril had one of his water colour paintings hanging up on the wall. He said he was inspired to paint in the Creative Kids program because it made him feel unique.

“It’s my favourite thing to do,” Chevelle said, referring to his love of watercolour. “It makes me feel special.”

And it wasn’t just the artists who felt special but the parents who attended the reception after the workshop.

Aimee Whitbread, both a teacher and mother whose son had pottery and paintings on display, said she was happy to know such a program existed at the school because of the opportunity it presented her son.

“He’s had a wonderful time,” Whitbread said. “He’s had a lot more opportunity here than what he would have had just by doing art in the classroom.”

ARC artist members also were in attendance to give the children a hands on demonstration of the assorted art styles. Lessons in potting and ink work were available for students to witness and participate in as the reception went on throughout the afternoon.

Long-time organizer Joanna Wing said she was excited the program had taken the next step towards exhibiting the art.

Plans are already being made for next year’s Creative Kids art program and exhibition. Wing said she’s hopeful the guest artists involved in the coming year–alongside potter and tile painting –will also include a sculptor.
