North Battleford Relay for Life faces more delays

Jun 7, 2016 | 5:00 PM

People will have to wait a little longer to walk for the cause they hold dear.

The annual Relay for Life fundraising event in North Battleford is being postponed due to a lack of committee members and volunteer initiative.

Kalina Barlow, the fundraising specialist for the Saskatchewan division of the Canadian Cancer Society, said they didn’t have enough staff to set an event date.

“We are trying to make it go this year,” Barlow said. “I’ve been trying to find people for the committee and we are hoping to try and get it running in the fall this year.”

A healthy organizing committee has four members. As of right now, the committee in charge of the North Battleford branch has only three members to its name.

Barlow said she remains hopeful the committee will grow.

However, volunteering in North Battleford can be tricky when the office is shut down.

Unforeseen circumstances forced the branch to close temporarily in May, according to Barlow. There’s no date set for when it will reopen.

“They’re in the process of hopefully finding somebody soon,” she said.

If and when Relay for Life does happen, Barlow said she’s looking to use the Field House to host what will hopefully be a large event.

Anyone interested in registering to volunteer can do online.
