Golf tournament honouring a local man hits milestone

Jun 6, 2016 | 5:59 PM

One of the biggest golf tournaments in North West Saskatchewan turned 20 years old but it wasn’t just about golf. The Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation (BUHF) held its Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club Monday, June 6.

“It is a lot of fun but we also have to remember that we are celebrating a very honourable man,” Claudette McGuire, executive director of the BUHF, said. “They chose to do the tournament in memory of Mr. Pruden because he was a very community minded man and family oriented so it was an easy fit.”

Pruden was an architect who put in a lot of time and effort into North Battleford’s image and improvement of his community.

Every year a spirit of giving award is given out to a person who emulates Pruden’s personality and love for the community. This year the Pruden family decided to honour the late Brian Maunula who passed away in late February at the age of 57. He frequently played in the golf tournament and was a pillar of the North Battleford community.

“This year funds from the event have been allocated to the BUHF to purchase an Alenti Tub Chair Bath for Battlefords Region Homecare.” McGuire said. “It’s for clients who can’t physically get in and out of bath tubs and who don’t have the luxury of one of these devices at home. They are able to come and have a bath.”

The tournament has been at capacity for roughly the last 12 years and currently has a waiting list. Some of the prizes this year included a free pontoon boat rental for a day and Bulova watches.
