Warning about scam posing as a US Treasury bureau

Jun 6, 2016 | 4:16 PM

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) is warning the public about an ongoing scam where people are being asked for personal and financial information.

The scam is being committed by somebody claiming to be from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a bureau of the United States Department of Treasury.

The scam claims the information is needed to aid a FinCEN investigation of companies for fraud relating to the sale of securities to residents of Saskatchewan.

FinCEN representatives confirmed it does not send unsolicited requests nor seek personal information from the public. They also verified FinCEN deals exclusively with financial institutions and doesn’t directly investigate frauds.
