Jun 6, 2016 | 10:00 AM

Summer officially arrived as the professional chuckwagon season kicked off in North Battleford this past weekend.

The big winner was Kris Molle from Chauvin, AB. won the first two days, then took it home on Sunday for the big win in the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association event in North Battleford.

“It’s a great way to start the season,” Molle said. “Being able to say you’re the best, that’s what everyone strives for.”

Molle comes from a long line of pony chuckwagon racers growing up in Watson, SK.

“This is only my fifth year on the big wagons,” Molle said. “I didn’t start driving horses until a few years after I moved to Alberta. I’m the first one from my family to drive the big wagons so hopefully my daughter and son will follow in my footsteps.”

It has been a good five years for Molle as he has taken home numerous awards. He has won rookie of the year, most improved driver and now, a big win in North Battleford.

The next tournament is in Dewberry, AB., but the tour eventually leads to the Calgary Stampede which Molle described as “the best outdoor show in the world.”

Stampede is the biggest and most famous chuckwagon race where prize money tops $2 million.
