Barbecue profits will help include underprivileged into organized sports

All kids have the right to play regardless of financial situation. That’s the stance the KidSport program takes. Its main directive is make sure underprivileged kids can play organized sports. One of the way they raise funds is to have events like the barbecue held today, June 3, at the Territorial Place Mall.

“To see a smile on a kids face when he can participate in sports is priceless,” David Schell, co-chair of KidSport Battlefords, said. “For a kid in North Battleford that wants to participate in sports with his friends but they just can’t because of financial barriers can be very disheartening.”

Last year KidSport Battlefords spent $55,000 to put roughly 200 kids into organized sports.

“This year is going better than last year,” Schell said. “We’re getting more recognition. There weren’t many people in the Battlefords who knew about KidSport or that it was available.”

Schell believes sports is a basis for life as it teaches social, team working, coordination and discipline skills amongst participants early on.

“I come from a sports background and if I wasn’t able to play sports because of a financial situation I’d be devastated,” Schell said. “I want to thank the Battlefords as a community who have really embraced KidSport. We wouldn’t be able to help this many kids without them.”

KidSport will help underprivileged kids play any sport they choose, not just the mainstream ones like hockey and soccer.
