Four highways in the northwest slated for repairs

Jun 1, 2016 | 7:00 PM

Several highways in the northwest region will be getting makeovers thanks to the 2016-2017 provincial budget.

Highway 16 near Maymont, Highway 376 between Maymont and Asquith, Highway 340 north of Radisson and Highway 26 near Turtleford are a few of the highways on the list for repairs and maintenance this year.

Highway 376 and Highway 340 were both voted into the 2016 Worst Roads list by CAA Saskatchewan, a yearly poll ranking the worst ten roads in the province.

These four highways are part of the province’s Highways 2020 Plan, which is expected to take three years and cost $70 million. This year, the highways on the list will each get part of an allocated $30 million.

The Rural Municipality of Mervin’s head administrator Ryan Domotor said he was part of a meeting in the winter about repairing Highway 26 in two places, and said he hadn’t heard whether the budget announcement meant both of the areas had been approved or just the one that was closer to Turtleford. Either way though, he said they need it.

“Well it sure wouldn’t hurt,” he said. “You can tell how it’s declined over the years with all the trucks going over it.” He added all the heavy loads travelling down the highway help to deteriorate it.

Domotor said construction in the area will hopefully employ a few locals in his R.M., but that all depends on the construction company that’s chosen. He said since repairs were already discussed in the winter, hopefully the plans will be ready in time for the short construction season.
