Herald sale will not affect the paper: President

May 30, 2016 | 4:54 PM

Since announcing its purchase of the Prince Albert Daily Herald earlier today, May 30, the president of Star News Publishing promises the paper will remain the product it is currently.

“For the time being… it’s the Prince Albert Daily Herald, that’s the name of the paper. We have no immediate plans to change that at all,” Roger Holmes said adding there is no intention to limit distribution.

Despite new ownership, everyone currently employed at the paper will remain on the payroll, Holmes said.

The Herald was one of several Saskatchewan papers Montreal-based Transcontinental sold for an undisclosed price.Sixty-five staff members across Canada were affected by the layoffs.

Thirty of those lay-offs in Saskatoon were due to the closure of a printing plant. Because of the cuts, the Herald will now be printed in Wainwright, Alberta, a roughly four-hour trip to P.A.

Transcontinental cited the reason for sale as challenges in the print industry.

Holmes said the sale, effective overnight, was a strategic move.

“We just think it’s a good fit for our business and we want to be in business in Saskatchewan in a big way,” he said.

Holmes expects to be in P.A. on Wednesday to meet with Herald staff.
