Parks Canada invests $1.1 million in Fort Battleford

It will be a major facelift for Fort Battleford. The palisade around the fort is going to be replaced and improved with a Parks Canada investment.

$1.1 million is going to Fort Battleford as part of the over $22 million commitment to projects at Parks Canada locations across Saskatchewan. The palisade was identified to be in need of replacement or repairs amid safety concerns for the site and its visitors.

In order to ensure safety during construction, the entire wooden palisade will be replaced after the close of the operating season.

“Our goal is to minimize inconveniences to visitors as a result of infrastructure improvement projects. Public safety is Parks Canada’s primary concern and there will be occasions when Parks Canada will be required to close or restrict visitor access to certain areas where work is ongoing,” Saskatchewan South Field Unit Communications Officer Lisa Leuty said in an email.

Funding for these projects gives a boost to the parks which are major destinations for locals and tourists across the province.

“Investments in preservation, rehabilitation, and restoration of our national historic sites, like Fort Battleford, will protect our heritage and strengthen their appeal as destinations to celebrate our nation’s achievements,” Leuty said.

The money going to Fort Battleford is also part of Parks Canada’s $3 billion federal infrastructure program for national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas across Canada.
