North Battleford EMS plan to educate community on safety procedures this week

May 24, 2016 | 5:00 PM

EMS week kicked off on Sunday, May 22 and staff at the WPD branch of North Battleford believe the week is a perfect time to educate community residents on the proper procedures when it comes to dealing with safety standards, emergencies and accidents.

Jessica Stephens, operations manager for the WPD branch in North Battleford, said the list of upcoming events will assist those who wish to become familiarized with the correct emergency procedures, both at home and at an accident site. She said it will raise awareness and educate those who are curious about the ways in which the ambulance service provides safety for patients and victims.

“We really want to promote safety and this means having a safe community where everyone is involved.” Stephens said.

The WPD ambulance dispatch of North Battleford will be hosting the events in different locations around town this week, starting at their base with a free car seat safety clinic on Thursday, May 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The clinic will be able to shed light on how to properly seat children in different kinds of vehicles.

“The car seat safety course is actually new this year. We are hoping we have a good turnout,” she said.

A mock accident is also scheduled on the same night, where Stephens said people will be able to see the inner workings of paramedics, police staff and firefighters on the scene of an accident.

The accident demonstration will be held at the Frontier mall. Its purpose is to familiarize locals with what goes on, raise awareness and also provide tips on what people can do should they experience an incident for themselves.

“It gives people a chance to see what’s going on, a chance to actually see a car accident and see what we do. We have the fire department and the RCMP there to help us. And people see us work together as a team. A lot of people want to know what we do.”

If people wish to meet the paramedics, the annual beef on a bun meet and greet will also be on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at the office located on 11 Avenue and 103 Street.

Stephens said the beef on a bun is a celebration where people can come out and see the paramedics under happier circumstances.

“We usually see people on their worst day, and we want to see people in the positive light too.” she said.
