Two Battlefords AAA Sharks invited to Sask. U18 camp

The Battlefords AAA Sharks have found another bright spot to the 2015-16 season. Forwards Keara Amson and Jordan Kulbida have been named to the 2016 U18 summer camp roster for Saskatchewan.

Kulbida was one of the top recruits for the Sharks last season and lived up to her billing by leading the team in scoring with five goals and seven assists. Amson wasn’t far behind, as she finished with nine goals and two assists.

“Over the course of the season I got better and became more confident as a leader,” 15-year-old Amson said. “I was an assistant captain this year and I’m hoping to (be named captain) next year.”

The camp is being held in Wilcox at the Notre Dame Hounds rink in July, and Amson is familiar with the process as she was invited to the U16 camp last year. Should either of the girls make the team, they would play in the National Women’s tournament held in Regina next year, against teams from other provinces.

“It’s awesome, I’m so excited that we’re able to together and go through the experience together,” Kulbida said. “We got an email saying that we were accepted into the next ID camp. It was a shock but I definitely wanted to make it.”

“It will be nice to have someone on the ice that I’m used to. I think it’ll help me do better,” Amson said of going to the camp with Kulbida.

Both players feel whether or not they make the final team, the camp will help them bring their game to the next level as they both have their sights set on playing college hockey down the road.

This tournament does have a Sharks connection. Though she was playing with the Notre Dame Junior Women’s team last season, former Sharks captain and Vawn native Jetta Derenoski made the team for the 2015 championship in Hunstville, Ontario.

Ontario has dominated the National Women’s U18 tournament over the years. In 10 tournaments since 2001, a team from Ontario has won gold every year, with a second team from Ontario winning silver twice.

Saskatchewan went 0-2-1 at last year’s tournament.
