Memorial golf event proceeds to benefit those in home care

May 12, 2016 | 5:00 PM

When golfers, including the loved ones of the late Wayne Pruden, get together on the links Monday, June 6 proceeds from the course will go towards clients receiving home care.

The Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation is dedicating funds raised from the 20th Annual Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament to an Alenti tub chair lift. Foundation board chair Roger Anderson said the lift will be used to help clients have safe and comfortable baths. About 100 people every month are helped by Battlefords Region Home Care Department.

Anderson has participated in the golf tournament several times over the years and says it’s a great experience.

“You’re out there having fun. You see everybody out there, the participants, the volunteers, you see the enjoyment, the facial expressions during the day, people having fun. It’s just an experience that means so much, to give back,” he said. “It makes you feel good to be there and to just have fun.”

It was 20 years ago that the foundation decided to honour Wayne Pruden by naming its annual golf tournament after the longtime community builder. His legacy includes building the playground at Notre Dame School along with the North Battleford Golf and Country Club which is the site of the tournament

The tournament has raised over $410,000 over the years. That money has gone to buy equipment like monitors, diagnostic equipment, and last year, microscopes for the hospital laboratory.

At a kick-off news conference Thursday May ,12 the foundation thanked its sponsors which include Innovation Credit Union, M&M Food Market, and North Battleford Golf and Country Club.

The Texas Scramble tournament will begin at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start, and wrap up with a banquet at the Western Development Museum.
