Local no-kill shelter puts fashion paw forward

May 7, 2016 | 9:41 AM

Local shelter workers strutted down the runway and showed off the latest fashions to raise money for their shelter.

Kirsy Wandler and nine other women run North Battlefords non-profit, no-kill Lend a Paw shelter and held a fashion show fundraiser Friday night at the Western Development Museum.

One puppy in particular the event was raising money for is Tibeau, who Wandler said was hit by a car at only six-weeks-old and found lying next to his dead littermate two days later. He’s currently in Saskatoon for surgery and still has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

Lend a Paw uses donations, foster homes and volunteers to save about 200 dogs a year. The dogs are taken care of and given any medical attention they need until they are able to be adopted. After they’ve found homes for the dogs, Lend a Paw continues to help pay for the animals’ health costs.

“They actually become a part of our family,” Wandler said. “We just want to see them have a better life because they didn’t have a good start.”

Leah Milton is one of the people giving a dog a better life. She volunteers with Lend a Paw and adopted a miniature poodle, Rusty, from the organization two years ago.

“It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” she said. “He’s been the love of my life.”

Milton will be adopting another miniature poodle soon after it’s been rehabilitated by Lend a Paw.

“The great thing about Lend a Paw is that they really care about the animals, so it’s not about money, it’s not about anything other than the wellbeing of the dogs,” she said.
