Seeding still just getting underway in western Sask.

May 5, 2016 | 1:02 PM

Despite the recent warm and dry weather, crop producers in northwestern Saskatchewan are still only just getting started with spring seeding.

Seeding progress in the Northwest region was only at three per cent, as of the crop reporting period which ended May 2. It was a little farther along, at six per cent, in the west central region. Both are about on par with the provincial five-year average. However, major progress in the southwest is pulling this year’s provincial average up to 15 per cent.

The west central district reported very little rain, with the highest total at Macklin, with 5 millimetres. The region is starting to become short of topsoil moisture, and a general rain will be needed soon. Some farmers are considering their options for seeding as a result of the dry conditions.

The area reports winter cereals came through okay, but with some winterkill.
