North Stars’ Kanter commits to NCAA Div. III

Fresh off being named the Battlefords North Stars playoff MVP, Baxter Kanter has committed to play NCAA Div. III hockey at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, next season.

“It’s awesome to not have that in the back of your head, worrying about what you’re going to be doing next year. It’s really exciting,” Kanter said noting North Stars head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg helped orchestrate the scholarship.

Kanter nearly doubled his offensive numbers from nine points his rookie season to 17 this past year. He scored six points in nine playoff games before the North Stars were eliminated in the semi-finals by the Flin Flon Bombers. He was named the team’s most improved player in his rookie season.

His big, physical presence on the ice was a big factor in Wisconsin’s interest in Kanter.

“The coach was able to watch some of my play and really liked my physicality and the energy I brought. It was a pretty quick process from start to finish. I was talking with Kevin about my plans for next year and he got in contact with Stevens Point.”

Hasselberg couldn’t give enough praise to Kanter.

“His relentless pursuit of the puck created time and space for his teammates. Away from the rink, his honest and humble demeanour consistently made time for fans, volunteers and supporters of the team. He will be a significant contributor for Stevens Point over the next four years,” he wrote in a release.

In 125 games with the North Stars, Kanter scored eight goals and added 26 assists while accumulating an astounding 359 penalty minutes.

The Pointers are coming off a national championship win, as they defeated St. Norbert in the title game in March, securing their fifth national championship since 1993.
