Natural gas to be released for SaskEnergy training

Apr 23, 2016 | 8:56 AM

SaskEnergy has plans to conduct some intense training coming up on Monday April, 25 and Tuesday, April 26 in North Battleford.

The Crown corporation will be conducting a controlled burn of natural gas at SaskEnergy’s office in the city. The flares are planned between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. both days, and drivers going past may see a two to three-foot flame being emitted from a six-foot flare stack attached to a mobile compressed natural gas (CNG) trailer.

According to a release from SaskEnergy CNG trailers are used to provide temporary service to customers either during planned pipeline maintenance, or when an emergency occurs, such as when a pipeline is ruptured during unsafe excavation.

During the training SaskEnergy plans to release some natural gas in a controlled burn, the flare is an industry standard procedure which reduces the carbon footprint of the vented gas by 85 per cent. The area around the flare will be supervised and barricaded for safety, however traffic will not be restricted.
