Seven weeks after steaming began, the Edam East thermal project is now producing oil.

Husky Energy says production began at the project northwest of the Battlefords, the first of three being brought online this year as part of the Lloyd Value Chain. An official opening at the site was held March 1, 2016.

“Edam East is another example of the quick ramp ups that we’ve come to expect from these developments,” said Husky CEO Asim Ghosh in a news release. Such facilities have operating costs that average seven dollars per barrel of oil produced.

As many as 30 people work full-time at Edam East, which will produce 10,000 barrels of oil. Husky expects to have Edam West producing 4,500 barrels per day, and Vawn, with an output of 10,000 barrels per day, online later in 2016.
