Elementary school employees on Sask. First Nation facing charges

Two elementary school employees on the Beardy’s Okemasis First Nation were recently terminated.

George Gamble, formally of Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School, is facing charges of sexual exploitation and sexual interference.

Candace Scott, a counsellor in charge of education on the reserve, said the other employee is also facing charges. She added the terminations were unrelated.

Scott said she could not provide any other details but said students at the school were not involved in the separate incidences.

Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation council have released a statement ensuring the community they are following provincial protocol and resources have been made available to the victims.

“Our first priority is that our children and families feel safe and have the necessary counselling, mental health supports, and spiritual guidance they require. More resources and support may be called upon if required to assist our community,”

Council asked the community to respect the privacy of the alleged victims.
